It is a major tourist destination for hikers and climbers due to its proximity to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16828\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_8473.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16827\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_8477.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The town gets its name from a wooden fort which was built in 1654 to &#8220;control the Highland clans.&#8221; The fort is long gone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16829\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_8485.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"309\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16830\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_8486.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"298\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a pleasant look-around in Fort William, we took a ferry to the Isle of Skye.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16831\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_8495.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16832\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_8502.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Isle of Skye is\u00a0the largest and most northern of the Inner Hebrides chain of islands on the northwestern coast of Scotland.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16833\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_8511.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"241\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16834\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_8516.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16835\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_8519.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The main industries are tourism, agriculture, fishing and forestry.
