We had several days to explore before leaving the United Kingdom so we took the smaller slow roads to see the charming towns in the area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16932\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_9831.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Elie and Earlsferry are quaint coastal towns with attractive cottages and commercial fishing boats.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16933\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_9827.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16934\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_9844.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" \/><\/p>\n<p>St. Monans Windmill was used in the production of salt. \u00a0For many centuries, sea water was evaporated in shallow ponds nearby to produce &#8220;bay salt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16936\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_9861.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16937\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_9864.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We tried to stay on the back roads but were very surprised to discover how narrow they were. There was hardly any room for passing farm equipment:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16938\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_9874.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A summer parade was another challenge:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16939\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_9875.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Elie Ness Lighthouse:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16940\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_9882.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hard to believe it was the middle of July. Bruce was a successful merchant who established a coal mine near the town.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16950\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_0066.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Caerlaverock Castle is a triangular medieval fortress, complete with a moat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16952\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_0107.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trebuchet in the photo below is a modern reproduction of the popular catapult used in medieval times before the advent of gunpowder.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16953\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_0106.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"318\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16954\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_0111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16955\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_0126.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dundrennan Abbey, near Kirkcudbright, was a Cistercian monastery established in 1142 by Fergus of Galloway. Mary, Queen of Scots spent her last night here in 1568 before imprisonment by the English.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16956\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_0147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16957\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_0153.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Orchardton Tower is a ruined tower house in Kirkcudbrightshire, Dumfries &amp; Galloway Scotland. It was built in the late 1400s by John Cairns and used as a bakehouse and shelter for livestock, as well as living quarters.
