It&#8217;s been an amazing adventure exploring lovely towns, and seeing charming cottages and fascinating ancient castles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16967\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0314.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We drove southeast toward Dumfries to the town of Kirkcudbright, south of Glasgow at the mouth of the River Dee, near the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16968\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p>MacLellan&#8217;s Castle was built in the late 16th century on the site of a medieval monastery. \u00a0Today, the castle ruins are managed by an agency of the government which oversees historic structures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16969\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16970\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16971\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cairnholy is the site of two Neolithic chambered tombs located outside the village of Carsluith in Dumfries &amp; Galloway. It is believed that the cairns were erected sometime between 4000 to 2500BC.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16972\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0313.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16973\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Local tradition maintains that this was the tomb of <em>Galdus<\/em>, a mythical Scottish king.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16974\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0249.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Modern wind turbines dotted the farmlands:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16976\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0290.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We drove across the border between Scotland and England because we wanted to see the beautiful Lake District. \u00a0The lovely market town of Keswick, pronounced <em>&#8220;KEZ-ik,&#8221; <\/em>is locate within the Lake District National Park<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16977\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0318.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16978\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0320.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Keswick was first recorded in the 1200s but became popular during the 19th century because of the poets, writers, and artists who were attracted to the scenic beauty of the region. The poets Coleridge, Southey, and Wordsworth settled in Grasmere and wrote about the beauty of the Lake District.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16979\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0325.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Keswick&#8217;s market has an unbroken tradition for 740 years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16980\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0336.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17005\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/IMG_0317.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The stone circle at Castlerigg is located on a hill just outside Keswick. It was constructed during the early Bronze Age between 3300 to 900BC and was used in solstice celebrations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16981\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0397.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bowder Stone is a large lava boulder that fell from a crag about 12,000 years ago. The National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty oversees the stone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16982\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0441.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A little bit of &#8220;mist&#8221; on the Scottish roads:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16983\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We pulled into a &#8220;Passing Zone&#8221; to let a bus go by on a very narrow British road:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16984\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0459.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16985\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0462.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was tricky driving a standard-shift car on the left-side of very narrow roads! Jeff handled it very well, while I closed my eyes! This was a defensive fortification built by the Romans in 122AD, during the reign of the emperor Hadrian. The Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16993\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0581.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16994\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0564.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We returned to Edinburgh for an overnight at the end of our trip to return the rental car and fly home:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16995\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0588.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16996\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0604.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had an amazing drive around Scotland for almost three weeks. The magnificent green countryside was dotted with sheep. Towns were quaint with cozy stone cottages. We saw many castles and cathedral ruins and other historical sights.
