My granddaughter, Hannah, has been living in Xativa for the last year and working as an English teaching assistant in a rural high school. So, I was long overdue for a visit!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_E1309.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18835\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Schiphol Airport<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>One of the best innovations in Europe now are the low-cost budget airline companies that connect many European cities. I made a reservation on Transavia Airlines for the 2 1\/2 hour flight from Amsterdam to Valencia, Spain. It was an easy and pleasant no-frills flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"235\" height=\"400\" data-id=\"18836\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/SQGC0369.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18836\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"349\" height=\"400\" data-id=\"18837\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_7577.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18837\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, Hannah met me at Valencia airport and helped get me and my suitcase from the airport through two train systems to the city of Xativa. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1347.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18838\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Quiet Square in Xativa, Spain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Xativa is a medieval city which is famous for its mountain-top twin fortifications and defensive walls simply called &#8220;Xativa Castle.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"293\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1357.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18844\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It was a long walk from the train station through Xativa to the Montsant Hotel, which is located outside the city on the hill leading up to the Castle.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" data-id=\"18846\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1371-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18846\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"307\" data-id=\"18847\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1384.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18847\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Montsant Hotel was built on the bones of a 14th century convent and the old stone buildings were impressive. The magnificent gardens had an amazing assortment of beautiful flowering plants and trees. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18848\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Castle was Illuminated at Night<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It rarely rains in Spain, however this was an unusually rainy week. Hannah&#8217;s school closed because of the rain! So, we decided to brave the elements and wander up to experience the famous Xativa Castle. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_E1549.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18856\" width=\"400\" height=\"329\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>We had so much fun hiking up the steep hill and exploring the medieval castle in the pouring rain! Han and I had a wonderful dinner of local speciality foods at a restaurant called &#8220;Grandma&#8217;s House&#8221; &#8211; <em>Casa la Abuela.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_7653.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18864\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Supper at <em>Casa la Abuela<\/em> (Grandma&#8217;s House)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1542.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18865\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">View of The Castle in the Rain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Han and I also took the train into Valencia, a 45 minute ride, to see the sights. Valencia is a beautiful city with amazing architecture, museums, markets, great restaurants, wonderful parks and gardens, and of course old historic churches. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_E1715.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18867\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Estacio del Nord &amp; Plaza de Toros de Valencia<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Of course, we had to have real <em>Paella Valenciana<\/em> &#8211; the authentic paella! No seafood; cooked with chicken, green beans, rabbit, snails, pork, and a special local short-grain rice.
