I flew into the capital city of <strong>Rabat<\/strong> on February 29th. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"276\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8163.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19585\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Avenue Mohammed V<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Rabat is the governmental center of Morocco and the primary residence of King Mohammed VI. The city was very clean, quite modern, and walkable. The Onomo Hotel is located in the center of Rabat.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8452.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19586\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mohammed VI Museum of Modern Art<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Modern Art Museum had an interesting exhibit featuring the contemporary poet and artist, Abdellatif Laabi. I also visited the Museum of History and Civilizations and the beautiful Villa des Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"306\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8655.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19588\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Guard at the Mausoleum of Mohammed V<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The 12th century Hassan Tower complex was also the location of the tombs of King Hassan II and King Mohammed V, the present king&#8217;s father and grandfather. The mausoleum is decorated with beautiful colorful geometric mosaic tiles.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"332\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19589\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pouring Moroccan Mint Tea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The tour was created by the Center for Cross Cultural Learning which is located in the Medina or &#8220;old city&#8221; of Rabat. The Road Scholar group heard several excellent lectures on Moroccan culture and we enjoyed several delicious traditional meals prepared at the center.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"304\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8763.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19590\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dar Shaan Riad<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Cultural Center was housed in a <em>&#8220;riad<\/em>&#8221; which is a classic town house set around an interior  courtyard. We also enjoyed lunch at <em>Dar Shaan Riad<\/em> which has been converted to a lovely small hotel. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8743.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19591\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rabat&#8217;s <em>Kasbah des Oudaias<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A <em>&#8220;kasbah&#8221;<\/em> is a fort or citadel. Rabat&#8217;s kasbah was built by Muslim refugees from Spain in the 15th century. Inside the walls are residential buildings which had been recently repainted in white. Also, the narrow alleyways were neatly repaved giving the district a clean almost modern appearance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group left Rabat on March 6 and we drove north by bus to Tangier. We stopped for lunch in the lovely town of <em>Asilah<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"301\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8942.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19596\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wall of the Medina of Asilah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Since 1978, Asilah has hosted the annual <em>International Cultural Moussem of Asilah<\/em>. Every year artists are invited to decorate the whitewashed walls of the city. The murals stay up until the following year for everyone to enjoy. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"318\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8977.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19597\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Artistic Entrance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8966.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19598\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Some Asilah Murals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Asilah is located on the Atlantic Ocean so we enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8943.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19600\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Friendly Locals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Many signs in Asilah were in Spanish reflecting its Iberian history.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"342\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_8960.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19601\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Colorful Carpets Look Like Murals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>We continued to <strong>Tangier,<\/strong> which is an international city located on the Strait of Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"326\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9075.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19602\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cape Spartel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Cape Spartel is the northwest corner of the African Continent. The city, located in northern Morocco, was built in the <em>Rif<\/em> Mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_E9509.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19613\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chefchaouen, Morocco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Muslims and Jews from Spain settled in Chefchaouen during the <em>&#8220;Reconquista<\/em>&#8221; from 1492 to 1610. The original citadel was founded in the late 15th century and today it is a museum exhibiting archeological objects.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9452.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19617\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">15th Century Kasbah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>On our way to the city of Fes, the motor coach stopped at a gas station\/rest stop.  We watched a woman prepare two large tagines for people who would later stop for lunch. She was very pleased to show us her work.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"318\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9581.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19619\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Commercial Cook at a Rest Stop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Later, we stopped at the city of<strong> Ouazzane<\/strong> for lunch at the home of the directors of the Cultural Center. It was still raining when arrived. Fes was founded in 808 AD and was once the ancient capital of Morocco. One day we went on a field trip to the Roman ruins of <em>Volubilis<\/em>. The scenery became more barren as the motor coach drove east. We saw the ruins of the medieval city of <em>Sijilmassa<\/em>. So much fun!!! We had dinner in the main tent and afterwards enjoyed live music outside under the stars. The city is the most visited city in Morocco. There were many foreign tourists everywhere. The next day, the group rode the motor coach to Casablanca. This was the last day of the tour. It was completed in 1993 by the former king of Morocco. I wanted to see more of Casablanca so I extended my stay two more days. However, it is really<strong> not<\/strong> a tourist city and there are very few attractions for tourists. The facts are: the movie was completely filmed in Hollywood and the story had nothing to do with the city of Casablanca, except the name. But I had to go!! It was a small shopping district which was built in the 1930s. I had a wonderful and amazing time in Morocco. It is a dynamic country with great potential.
