{"id":3378,"date":"2011-11-04T18:22:28","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T23:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=3378"},"modified":"2011-11-21T17:49:44","modified_gmt":"2011-11-21T22:49:44","slug":"a-rainy-day-in-venice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=3378","title":{"rendered":"Rainy Day in Venice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Friday &#8211; November 4, 2011<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was a cool rainy morning in Venice. \u00a0The famous Sirocco wind was blowing and we lingered over breakfast at the hotel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8348.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3380\" title=\"DSC_8348\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8348.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a>Venetian Passing the San Samuele Vaporetto Station<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We decided to go to Ca&#8217; Rezzonico which is one of the museums in Venice located right on the Grand Canal. \u00a0We missed it the last time we visited because of the heat. \u00a0We purchased transportation passes which gives us seven days of unlimited vaporetto rides, and hopped on a boat to the stop right outside the museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8360.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3381\" title=\"DSC_8360\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a>Entrance to Ca&#8217; Rezzonico<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ca&#8217; Rezzonico, also called the museum of 18th Century Venice, is housed in a large magnificent Venetian palazzo built in 1667. \u00a0Unfortunately, photos were not allowed so I couldn&#8217;t document the experience. \u00a0The palazzo has very impressive Murano glass chandeliers and intricately carved furniture which reflect the lifestyles of \u00a0wealthy Venetians of the period. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3292.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3382\" title=\"IMG_3292\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3292.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a>Venice Rooftops From Ca&#8217; Rezzonico<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are several Tiepolo paintings on the ceilings, and other notable Italian artists&#8217; works are displayed. \u00a0The Martini gallery on the top floor houses a fine collection of Venetian art. One interesting fact is that the poet Robert Browning died in the palazzo in 1889.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After a snack at the cafe, we hopped on a vaporetto and went to the San Polo district to visit the Scuola Grande di San Rocco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8363.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3385\" title=\"DSC_8363\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8363.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a>Campo de San Rocco<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Venetian &#8220;Scuolas&#8221; are are artistic jewels which are scattered around the city. \u00a0Scuolas, which were created during the Middle Ages, were fraternities or members of guilds which offered a variety of services to the members. \u00a0There are several large paintings by Tintoretto on the walls and ceiling of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. \u00a0There are also paintings by Titian (1500s) and Tiepolo (1700s).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3295.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3387\" title=\"IMG_3295\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a>Inside the Scuola Grande di San Rocco<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We walked around the Scuola and marveled at the incredible paintings. \u00a0We sat for a while in the magnificent room. \u00a0Improved lighting highlighted wonderful carvings on the walls. \u00a0Then we crossed the Campo to the Church of San Rocco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8369.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3384\" title=\"DSC_8369\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8369.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Church of San Rocco<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The small church is a treasure trove of Tintoretto paintings which depict the life of St. Roch. \u00a0It&#8217;s incredible to realize that the art is part of the people&#8217;s every-day lives and not limited to museums or other remote show places.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_83702.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3392\" title=\"DSC_8370\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_83702.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a>Casa di Carlo Goldoni<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8374.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3393\" title=\"DSC_8374\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8374.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a>The Grand Canal<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After all the walking and sight seeing in the museums we were getting tired, so we returned to our hotel to rest. \u00a0After a couple of hours we ventured out for dinner. \u00a0We had wanted to eat at d&#8217;Ivo, which Jeff had read about, but without reservations we were turned away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On our way out, I asked the maitre d&#8217; to recommend another restaurant and he sent us to Ai Mercanti. \u00a0Jeff knew that this was nouvelle Italian from the menu posted outside, but we went in for a unique experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_32981.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3400\" title=\"IMG_3298\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_32981.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span>Our Secondi Piattis at Ai Mercanti<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For our first course, I had pigeon soup with pigeon liver and Jeff had tortilloni stuffed with chicken and veal kidneys. \u00a0Our second course was squid and cuttlefish for me and venison for Jeff. \u00a0Everything was very tasty and delicious! \u00a0It was a fun restaurant, even if the portions were rather small!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3395\" title=\"IMG_3300\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a>Side Door of Ristorante d&#8217;Ivo<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As we walked back to the hotel through the dark quiet Venetian alleyways, we passed d&#8217;Ivo.
