Strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Monday &#8211; November 7, 2011<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What a difference a day makes! \u00a0Finally, a sunny morning! \u00a0What a difference the sun makes!! \u00a0We were so excited about the sun shining that we skipped the hotel breakfast and went out to greet the day! \u00a0We were surprised to see the highest alta aqua of the week! \u00a0The entire area of Piazza San Marco was flooded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_87031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3480\" title=\"DSC_8703\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_87031.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a>Alta Aqua in Piazza San Marco<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were a few tourists out, along with Venetians rushing to work, all balancing their way on the elevated platforms across the piazza. \u00a0The morning line to visit the magnificent Basilica had started on another walkway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8672.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3475\" title=\"DSC_8672\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8672.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a>Early Morning Shoppers or Waders?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was water everywhere! \u00a0The restaurant chairs were knee-deep in water. \u00a0It was funny to see a couple of seagulls swimming in the middle of the Piazza San Marco. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8679.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3476\" title=\"DSC_8679\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8679.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Reflection<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8690.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3477\" title=\"DSC_8690\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8690.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a>Alta Aqua Everywhere<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8696.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3478\" title=\"DSC_8696\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8696.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a>The Grand Canal<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The shops sold everything that tourists need to survive wind, rain, and alta aqua: umbrellas, plastic ponchos, raincoats, and rubber boots for 15 Euros.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We made our way on the elevated walkways to the San Marco vaporetto station. \u00a0First we noticed there was no line to board the boat\/bus, then we saw the lighted sign alternating between Italian and English:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8711.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3483\" title=\"DSC_8711\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8711.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a>Vaporetto Station Sign<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My first thought was, &#8220;Do we get a 24 hour extension on our 7-Day vaporetto pass?&#8221; \u00a0:-) \u00a0We had used public transportation frequently when were too tired to walk, or needed a break, or just to see Venice from the water. \u00a0Then the thought of the challenge of getting around Venice without the vaporettos arose in my consciousness. \u00a0My &#8220;map brain&#8221; was in full gear!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8710.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3484\" title=\"DSC_8710\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8710.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a>The Grand Canal<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unfortunately, the clouds were moving in again but the temperature was comfortable and the sunlight was brighter than it had been for days. \u00a0We walked toward the Realto Bridge trying new pathways. \u00a0We stopped at a Venetian coffee shop for delicious stand-up cappuccinos and pastries with the locals. \u00a0No English spoken, but we did OK!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8725.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3485\" title=\"DSC_8725\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8725.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a>Window of the Famous Millinery Shop<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then we accidentally found Guiliana Longo&#8217;s hat shop. \u00a0We had read about her famous shop before we left New York and it was one of our planned destinations. \u00a0However, it&#8217;s so difficult to find any specific place in Venice that we had almost abandoned the idea. \u00a0Then, we were walking along and there it was!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8727.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3486\" title=\"DSC_8727\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8727.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Gondoliers&#8217; Hats<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Guiliana Longo makes all the hats for the gondoliers! \u00a0She makes the funny straw summer hats with colorful ribbons and the warmer wool winter berets for all the 400 plus gondoliers who work in Venice. I wondered what the different color ribbons mean. Vegetables<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8782.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3505\" title=\"DSC_8782\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8782-290x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>News Stand<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We tried to get away from the tourist paths to see where the Venetians lived. \u00a0We found some quiet, clean alleyways with European-style family shops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We crossed a small bridge and arrived at a rather large piazza: the Campo di Gesuiti with the Baroque-style Jesuit Church on the right. \u00a0We could see the lagoon at the end of the street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_87862.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3508\" title=\"DSC_8786\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_87862.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a>Campo di Gesuiti<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> We sat on one of the benches to rest since we had been walking for quite a while. \u00a0The streets were empty of people but we could hear music echoing off the stone buildings. \u00a0Wonderful smells of onions and garlic cooking somewhere near, reminded us that it was past lunch time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8799.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3509\" title=\"DSC_8799\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8799-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>Isola di San Michele<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8797.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3510\" title=\"DSC_8797\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8797-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a>Fondamenta Nove Vaporetto Station<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We walked out to the long quay known as Fondamenta Nove in this part of Cannaregio. \u00a0The Allaguna boats from the airport and the vaporettos to Murano and Burano have stations here. \u00a0Since we were tired from walking, on another day we would have taken a vaporetto somewhere for lunch, but we were reminded that there was a public workers strike and the boats weren&#8217;t running. \u00a0I hoped they were having a nice day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8814.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3511\" title=\"DSC_8814\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8814.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Campo San Apostoli in the Rain<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As we walked back toward the Rialto and San Marco, it started to rain. \u00a0We stopped under an awning near the lovely Campo San Apostoli to watch some gondoliers hand out umbrellas to their passengers and put on their rain jackets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8815.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3512\" title=\"DSC_8815\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8815.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a>Gondola in the Rain<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was getting windy and chilly and we were tired from walking. \u00a0We luckily found a fabulous restaurant for lunch named Fiaschetteria Toscana. \u00a0It had been listed in Venice Zagats and received high reviews; it even had a Michelin note. \u00a0It has been rated as the best seafood restaurant in Venice. \u00a0In olden days the building had been a Tuscan wine distribution center, hence the name of the restaurant. &#8220;Fiaschetteria&#8221; is supposed to mean a flask or other wine carrying container.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8765.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3528\" title=\"DSC_8765\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8765.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a>Wine Delivery to Fiaschetteria Toscana<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We were given a warm welcome and seated in the front room. \u00a0The waiter, who spoke fluent English, was chatty and friendly and we felt at ease. \u00a0For an appetizer, we shared the famous Venetian dish of \u00a0fish &#8220;in soar &#8221; which is marinated fish, usually sardines. \u00a0It was unbelievable! \u00a0Jeff had lasagna in a mushroom sauce for a main course. \u00a0I had tortillini pasta with squid cooked in squid ink. \u00a0Delicious!! We had a nice conversation with two women who sat at the next table, who were visiting from Norway. We had stayed at a lovely family-owned B &amp; B on the Grand Canal which had been almost impossible to find from the Silvestri vaporetto station. \u00a0Every time we went out, we wondered if we would be able to find it later when we wanted to return, especially in the dark! \u00a0It became our private joke that we would have to sleep on the streets because we couldn&#8217;t find our way back to the B &amp; B. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8862.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3519\" title=\"DSC_8862\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8862.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Along the Grand Canal<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As it turned out, I was able to find the tiny back streets that led to the B &amp; B, but Jeff remembered the final little twists and turns that brought us to the entrance of the building. \u00a0So typically Venice!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8866.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3521\" title=\"DSC_8866\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8866.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Local Osteria<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Like old Venetians, we walked along familiar streets and noted the changes to the San Polo Sestiere since our last visit. \u00a0The shops seemed to be more prosperous, but there were also many more tourist shops selling everything from cheap souvenirs and postcards to lovely handmade crafts. \u00a0It seemed to be a more artsy district with more cafes and small restaurants than the San Marco Sestiere. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8872.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3522\" title=\"DSC_8872\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8872.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a>Campo San Polo<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8884.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3523\" title=\"DSC_8884\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8884.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a>Poster Shop<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We remembered a traghetto station near the San Silvestri vaporetto station, so we looked for it. We wondered if they were on strike also. \u00a0Traghettos are slightly larger gondola-type boats which cross the Grand Canal between the Rialto and Accademia bridges. \u00a0There are two operators in the traghetto and they make it easier for local people to get around for a cheap price of .50 euros.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8886.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3524\" title=\"DSC_8886\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8886.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a>San Silvestri Traghetto<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We found the traghetto, which was running despite the vaporetto strike, and we paid our .50 euros each and stood up like the locals, for the ride across the canal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By the time we had our peaceful ride across the canal, it started to rain again. \u00a0It was a relatively short walk back to the hotel but it was chilly and raining heavily. \u00a0We put our digital cameras away and stopped at a corner shop called The American Cafe. \u00a0We thought we could resort to the familiar containers of hot carry-out tea but were thwarted by Italian customs. \u00a0They had paper cups but no tops! <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3330.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3532\" title=\"IMG_3330\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a>Small Painting on a Building<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We returned to our hotel to warm up and rest before venturing out again for dinner. \u00a0Later, the rain continued and we quickly walked to Campo San Filippo e San Giacomo and the Ristorante Aciugheta.
