in the Arsenale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tuesday &#8211; November 8, 2011<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another rainy alta aqua morning in Venice, Italy. \u00a0It was beginning to be routine for us. \u00a0There was a steady rain outside, so I decided \u00a0to leave my digital Nikon camera in the hotel room because I didn&#8217;t want to get it wet in the rain. \u00a0I took all the photos in today&#8217;s blog with my iPhone. \u00a0At the end of the day, I was pleasantly surprised with the iPhone photos. \u00a0They&#8217;re not too bad!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At least the vaporettos were running! \u00a0Our tickets to the Venice Biennale were still good for admission to the Arsenale and this was another good &#8220;museum day&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8615.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3537\" title=\"DSC_8615\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8615.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Waiting For a Sunny Day<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Arsenale is a huge tract of land and water in the Castello Sestiere which had been the dockyards of Venice since the early 1100s. \u00a0It is enclosed by medieval walls punctuated with towers. \u00a0The impressive land entrance is a Renaissance triumphal arch dating back to 1460 which is guarded by two ancient Greek lions. \u00a0We took the vaporetto from San Marco to the Arsenale station and walked to the entrance of the Art Biennale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3332.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3538\" title=\"IMG_3332\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3332.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a>The Hong Kong Frog King Exhibit<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The large exhibit space in the Arsenale was perfect for large contemporary art pieces because of the very high beamed ceilings and thick medieval brick columns. \u00a0Below are some of my photos from the exhibit. \u00a0I think they give a good idea of the art and the exhibition space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Inspired by unusual visual images, we left the Arsenale and walked toward the Grand Canal. \u00a0It was drizzling a little, but the sky seemed to be brightening over the lagoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3358.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3548\" title=\"IMG_3358\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a>Rio Dell&#8217; Arsenale<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We walked to the Arsenale vaporetto station and hopped (literally) onto the next vaporetto going north. We had never visited the huge church opposite Piazza San Marco, so we continued one more vaporetto stop to &#8220;La Salute&#8221;. \u00a0The huge marble church is formally known as the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. The beautiful white marble church was erected in 1631 after the Venetians, who were overwhelmed by the plague, pledged a solemn vow to build a church once the plague had subsided. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_87101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3551\" title=\"DSC_8710\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_87101.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"372\" \/><\/a>Basilica of Santa Marie della Salute<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The architectural interest of the basilica is that the interior space is dominated by a huge main dome with a large rotunda below which opens out to six chapels. \u00a0A number of notable Italian artists&#8217; paintings, including Titian and Tintoretto, adorn the walls of this impressive building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3360.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3552\" title=\"IMG_3360\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a>Light on the Grand Canal<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Basilica is on the end of the Dorsoduro Sestiere and we thought it would be fun to explore this district, which seems more residential. \u00a0I also wanted to see the Peggy Guggenheim collection which we had missed the last time we were in Venice. \u00a0The museum is just a short walk over a couple of bridges from La Salute. Unfortunately, when we got there, we discovered that the museum is closed on Tuesdays! \u00a0Oh well, there&#8217;s always next time!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3365.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3553\" title=\"IMG_3365\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3365.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a>Squeri di San Trovaso<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We walked along the Calle Nova Santa Agnese and found an outdoor cafe for lunch. \u00a0We sat at outdoor tables with some students from a nearby university. \u00a0Jeff and I had tasty sandwiches on good bread with fresh ingredients. \u00a0Well fortified, we continued exploring while the sun tired to come out. \u00a0We were rewarded by finding the Squero di San Trovaso. \u00a0This is one of the few &#8220;squeri&#8221; still in operation in Venice. \u00a0A &#8220;squeri&#8221; is a boatyard where gondolas are built and repaired. \u00a0How cool is that!!?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3367.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3554\" title=\"IMG_3367\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a>Workman at Squeri di San Trovaso<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We watched the activity at the squeri from the other side of the Rio San Trovaso for a little while and then continued walking down the street. A short distance away, we also found the woodworking shop where the little chairs and carved tops of the gondolas are made. \u00a0Amazing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3368.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3555\" title=\"IMG_3368\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3368.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Rio San Trovaso<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We came upon an open square (a campo) where there was an outdoor flea market. \u00a0I tired to buy some old postcards but everything was way over-priced, in dollars or euros. \u00a0It was fun to look at Venetian &#8220;collectibles&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8876.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3557\" title=\"DSC_8876\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8876.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a>The Mask Shop<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then we found the mask shop where we had purchased two masks on our last visit. \u00a0The owner had expanded into another shop, but we remembered the original and browsed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8881.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3558\" title=\"DSC_8881\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DSC_8881.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a>Mask Shop Window<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What a fun place! \u00a0All the masks are hand made of papier mache and hand-painted and decorated. \u00a0They even have a copy of the old plague doctor&#8217;s mask. \u00a0I imagine they do a great business during la Carnivale in the spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3369.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3556\" title=\"IMG_3369\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3369.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a>Traghetto on the Grand Canal<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We returned to the hotel to rest up before dinner. \u00a0Jeff read about a highly recommended restaurant near the Rialto called the Ristorante Rosa Rossa. \u00a0It was a modern style place with brick walls and nice warm decor. \u00a0The people were very friendly and after waiting for a nine o&#8217;clock reservation, we had a delicious dinner!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_0300-Version-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3578\" title=\"IMG_0300 - Version 2\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_0300-Version-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"448\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Note: the actor Johnny Depp, who owns a villa in Venice, purportedly likes to eat at Ristorante Rosa Rossa. \u00a0It is reported that Mr. Depp gave his jean-jacket to the owner and it is framed in a plexi-glass case and mounted on the back wall. \u00a0Here is Jeff&#8217;s photo of the jacket. \u00a0It would have been even more fun if Johnny Depp was there that night!
