{"id":475,"date":"2010-08-09T12:14:08","date_gmt":"2010-08-09T16:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=475"},"modified":"2018-09-03T15:53:06","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T19:53:06","slug":"shopping-at-the-grand-bazaar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=475","title":{"rendered":"Shopping at the Grand Bazaar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is Monday, August 9th and I have many days to write about.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll try to catch up by writing about today and add the past few day&#8217;s events when I have more time to write.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>All of my cousins are here in Istanbul.\u00a0 Roseanne arrived from New York on Saturday evening.\u00a0 Claudine, Astrig, Francoise, and Nicole arrived early Sunday at 3:30 in the morning.\u00a0 Today was Grand Bazaar Day for everyone!\u00a0 The bazaar is closed on Sundays so we couldn&#8217;t go yesterday.\u00a0 We had another good breakfast at the hotel and went out into the heat and humidity of Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_2972.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-480\" title=\"DSC_2972.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_2972.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The Seven Armenian Cousins at Breakfast<\/p>\n<p>Chris&#8217; sense of direction is amazing and he remembers where everything is!\u00a0 First we found a bank with an ATM machine to exchange Euros into Turkish Lires then we continued on to the Grand Bazaar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_2984.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-481\" title=\"DSC_2984.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_2984.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We entered the Grand Bazaar through the ancient Gate number 1 on Nuruosmaniye Street.\u00a0 Before you enter the gate, you see the date of 1461 posted on the stone columns.\u00a0 It&#8217;s amazing to think that this bazaar has been here for more than 600 years.\u00a0 The Grand Bazaar was here before Columbus discovered the Americas and it was certainly here in Istanbul during Marco Polo&#8217;s time.\u00a0 It has probably existed since the early times of trade and travel through Constantinople, and Byzantium, and earlier.\u00a0 Perhaps there has been a bazaar at this location for the last 2000 or 3000 years&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_3002.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-482\" title=\"DSC_3002.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_3002.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the cousins are &#8220;shoppers&#8221; and some of us are not.\u00a0 I&#8217;m one of the &#8220;nots.&#8221; \u00a0However, I do enjoy seeing the shops and stalls and all the &#8220;stuff&#8221; for sale. \u00a0And there&#8217;s nothing like a Turkish Bazaar!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_3125.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-483\" title=\"DSC_3125.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_3125.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Inside the Grand Bazaar<\/p>\n<p>We walked around the crowded bazaar for quite a while and talked to many salesmen.\u00a0 Or rather, they talked to us!\u00a0 With 4000 shops, there is a lot of stuff for sale.\u00a0 Where else can you buy a belly-dancer&#8217;s costume or water pipes for smoking apple-scented tobacco?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_3116.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-485\" title=\"DSC_3116.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_3116.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Chai and Baklava Time<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is Monday, August 9th and I have many days to write about.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll try to catch up by writing about today and add the past few day&#8217;s events when I have more time to write.
