{"id":5130,"date":"2012-10-24T19:54:24","date_gmt":"2012-10-24T23:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=5130"},"modified":"2012-11-08T19:16:46","modified_gmt":"2012-11-09T00:16:46","slug":"mariposa-means-butterfly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=5130","title":{"rendered":"Mariposa Means Butterfly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0October 24, 2012<\/p>\n<p>We left North Adams early and drove along scenic Route 2. \u00a0This is a narrow, twisty, windy, hilly, slow road with one genuine hair-pin turn. \u00a0Because it is the major east-west through-road across the mountains, there are large trucks traveling single-file with the cars. \u00a0With the common\u00a0<em>Deer Crossing<\/em> signs, there were <em>Bear Crossing<\/em> and <em>Moose Crossing<\/em> signs. \u00a0I watched carefully, but had no luck with any unusual sightings. \u00a0There was a recent article in the NY Times Travel Section which described some attractions along this northern Massachusetts road. \u00a0Signs along Route 2 informed us that it also called The Mohawk Trail. \u00a0There were shops along the Trail selling Native American goods, but we didn&#8217;t stop to verify authenticity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSC_5658.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5147\" title=\"DSC_5658\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSC_5658.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">House and Teepee Along The Mohawk Trail<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At 9:30 AM we arrived in Greenfield, Mass. and looked for someplace interesting to have breakfast. \u00a0We found Denny&#8217;s Pantry &#8211; Family Restaurant with large signs announcing they were not related to any chain restaurants. \u00a0The interior was set with mix &#8216;n&#8217; match wooden Colonial chairs and tables. \u00a0The patrons and waitstaff were all local people catching up on town gossip and making plans to meet later. \u00a0Breakfast was simple, tasty, and plentiful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSC_5656.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5148\" title=\"DSC_5656\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSC_5656.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a>Whitcomb Summit<\/p>\n<p>Well fortified, we continued eastward along beautiful Route 2 which follows the bends in the XXX River. \u00a0The trees were glowing in shades of orange, reds, and yellows as we drove through the former mill towns of Northern Massachusetts. \u00a0Entering the small town of Erving, Mass., we drove over the French King Bridge which looks like it should have been in Paris. \u00a0The bridge reminds motorists of the former wealth of the region when this area was full of factories and mills. \u00a0Today the buildings are mostly abandoned or modestly repurposed and there are high unemployment rates among the residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSC_5666.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5149\" title=\"DSC_5666\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSC_5666.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a>Main Entrance of the Mariposa Museum<\/p>\n<p>We drove as far as Nashua, New Hampshire and turned around to drive east along Route 101. \u00a0A young man in Nashua who learned we were tourists, recommended the Mariposa Museum in Peterborough, NH. \u00a0We had never heard of it, so thought it would be fun to go. \u00a0It was a Museum of World Cultures and Folk Tales and it was definitely worth visiting. \u00a0A lively presentation about people who had caused major changes in the world, was just ending and many people were milling around the small museum. \u00a0There was an excellent exhibit upstairs about the art and life of Woody Gutherie which was a part of their <em>Change Exhibit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSC_5677.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5150\" title=\"DSC_5677\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSC_5677.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>African Figures<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was also a collection of musical instruments from around the world which visitors could play. \u00a0Around the rooms were large cases full of international dolls, puppets, and other artifacts representing hundreds of different world cultures.
