May 12, 2013<\/p>\n<p>Another good reason to go to Boston is the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. \u00a0Mrs. Gardner built an Italian Renaissance palazzo to display her magnificent collection of 2,500 objects. \u00a0There are artifacts from Egypt, ancient Rome, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, China, Japan, the Middle East, and the Americas. \u00a0Unfortunately, photography is prohibited so I have no lovely photos of the museum to share.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Gardner&#8217;s museum has a breathtaking collection of art housed in a Venetian palace in downtown Boston. \u00a0The website provides a catalogue of the treasures, but doesn&#8217;t give the viewer an accurate sense of the size or grandeur of this unique palazzo. \u00a0 http:\/\/www.gardnermuseum.org<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5862.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5323\" title=\"IMG_5862\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5862.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a>Contemporary Art<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This day, the Gardner Museum was crowded with Mother&#8217;s Day families. \u00a0As the sun streamed into the center courtyard, casting shadows on the spring flowers and palms, my shutter-finger flexed uncontrollably. \u00a0We decided that we would return soon, but during the week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_61092.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5326\" title=\"DSC_6109\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_61092.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a>Institute of Contemporary Art<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The morning clouds gave way to a bright blue sky and we had enough time to go to the Institute of Contemporary Art located on Boston Harbor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6112.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5327\" title=\"DSC_6112\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/span><\/a>Harbor-side View of the ICA<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We read about the ICA and it sounded like an interesting place to visit, not only because of its excellent location on the waterfront, but also because of the unique architecture of the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_61241.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5331\" title=\"DSC_6124\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_61241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><\/span><\/a>Street Art Indoors<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were several works of contemporary artists on display in the galleries. \u00a0After two decades of working in San Francisco, &#8220;street artist&#8221;, Barry McGee&#8217;s works were brought inside for to create an inspiring exhibit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6128.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5332\" title=\"DSC_6128\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6128.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"276\" \/><\/span><\/a>Art Appreciation<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">McGee was a graffiti artist who also worked with &#8220;found objects&#8221; and discarded materials to express the pessimism of urban living, pollution, addiction,and poverty. \u00a0The market value of his artwork rose after several international exhibits. \u00a0As a result of the increased attention in the art world, his public pieces were scavenged or stolen. \u00a0I think they should have given cans of spray paint to the visitors for us to make art and participate in an interactive exhibit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6130.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5333\" title=\"DSC_6130\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"400\" \/><\/span><\/a>Graffiti Artists<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6132.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5334\" title=\"DSC_6132\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6132.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"400\" \/><\/span><\/a>Inside Outside<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I enjoyed Barry McGee&#8217;s works! \u00a0They expressed the tension of working in the streets of San Francisco and the grittiness of street life. \u00a0It must have been a challenge to display his work indoors in a gallery space.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6138.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5335\" title=\"DSC_6138\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6138.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a>Art or Nature?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">McGee&#8217;s work was a fitting end to our weekend. \u00a0We began with the memorial in Copley Square, which was a spontaneous public outpouring of emotions to honor the victims of the bombings at the finish of the Boston Marathon. \u00a0We ended with Barry McGee&#8217;s view of life on the streets in another major American city. \u00a0With the current thread of inequality, lack of respect for each other, and inhumane violence, it is a challenge to all of us to retain inner strength, maintain resiliency, and to question our values and attitudes toward other human beings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6137.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5336\" title=\"DSC_6137\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DSC_6137.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a>Natural Mural<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Barry McGee&#8217;s philosophy of art and life was recently quoted in a Boston newspaper:\u00a0<em>Are you into the magic of art? Just the magic of, how did that happen? And if you\u2019re standing in front of something and just don\u2019t understand it, but you\u2019re drawn to it? I think it\u2019s one of the last things that still has a magic to it.
