{"id":5642,"date":"2013-07-28T13:19:55","date_gmt":"2013-07-28T17:19:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=5642"},"modified":"2013-09-11T00:46:04","modified_gmt":"2013-09-11T04:46:04","slug":"parajanov-and-toumanian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=5642","title":{"rendered":"Art, Poetry, and a Drop of Honey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sunday &#8211; July 28, 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_7207.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5723\" title=\"DSC_7207\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_7207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><\/span><\/a>Goods For Sale<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Francoise left Yerevan and flew home to France very early this morning. \u00a0After I had breakfast at the hotel, I walked to the Vernissage outdoor market at the end of the street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_7216.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5726\" title=\"DSC_7216\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_7216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" \/><\/span><\/a>Craftsperson<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Vernissage continues the old trading tradition of the ancient Silk Road which passed through Armenia for thousands of years. \u00a0I had just two days left and I wanted to get some last minute souvenirs to take home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_7215.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5724\" title=\"DSC_7215\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_7215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"400\" \/><\/span><\/a>Vernissage Vendors<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Afterwards, I went to the Republic Square to find a taxi to the Sergey Parajanov Museum. \u00a0The taxi driver didn&#8217;t know the location of the museum so he asked several other drivers. \u00a0None of them knew where the museum was located. \u00a0I took my map of Yerevan out of my bag and showed it to the taxi driver and pointed to the museum on the map. \u00a0He studied it for a few minutes and nodded his head and indicated to me to get into his taxi. \u00a0The Parajanov Museum was located on a small dead-end street in a row of old residences along the top of the Hasdan Gorge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_85562.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5715\" title=\"DSC_8556\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_85562.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/span><\/a>Parajanov Museum Overlooking the Hasdan Gorge<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sergei Parajanov (1924-1990) was a Soviet Armenian film director and artist. \u00a0He invented his own cinematic style and maintained creative control over his films, despite the &#8220;socialist realism&#8221; dictated by the communist government at the time. He was imprisoned twice and persecuted by the Soviet regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_85531.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5716\" title=\"DSC_8553\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_85531.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" \/><\/span><\/a>Looking Into the Gorge &amp; and &#8220;The Legend of Suram Fortress.&#8221; \u00a0Although his films achieved international acclaim, they were banned in the Soviet Union and Parajanov was blacklisted from Soviet cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_8582.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5653\" title=\"DSC_8582\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_8582.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" \/><\/span><\/a>Decorated Hats<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The guide stated that Parajanov loved beautiful things. \u00a0He redecorated hats with a variety of objects and presented the hats to his female friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_8591.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5654\" title=\"DSC_8591\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_8591.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" \/><\/span><\/a>Additional Display Rooms<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The museum is brimming with thousands of art objects which Parajanov created. \u00a0His collection includes films, installations, collages, assemblages, drawings, dolls, hats, paintings, screenplays, librettos, and costumes. \u00a0The works of art demonstrate Parajanov&#8217;s amazing creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_85931.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5719\" title=\"DSC_8593\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_85931.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"243\" \/><\/span><\/a>Parajanov Memorabilia<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_8598.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5656\" title=\"DSC_8598\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_8598.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"400\" \/><\/span><\/a>A Bedroom<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I left the Parajanov Museum and found another taxi to take me to the Tumanyan Museum. \u00a0Hovhannes Tumanyan (1869-1923) was an Armenian poet and writer who is considered to be\u00a0\u201cthe greatest of all the Armenian poets, a patriarch of new Armenian poetry.\u201d \u00a0One of Tumanyan&#8217;s famous poems was titled, &#8220;A Drop of Honey.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_86141.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5720\" title=\"DSC_8614\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_86141.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" \/><\/span><\/a>Museum of Hovhannes Tumanyan<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The museum has a large collection of manuscripts, letters, books, photographs, drawings, translations, and memorabilia collected during Tumanyan&#8217;s lifetime. \u00a0He wrote poetry, novels, articles for journals, librettos, and fairy tales. \u00a0One of the women in the hotel told me that Toumanyan was her favorite author. When she was \u00a0young, she visited his museum several times a year to see his original manuscripts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_8619.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5658\" title=\"DSC_8619\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_8619.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/span><\/a>View Down Toumanyan Street<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After seeing the exhibits in the museum, I walked down Toumanyan Street toward the center of Yerevan. \u00a0The traffic was light and families were out shopping or eating at the many local restaurants which lined the street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_86281.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5721\" title=\"DSC_8628\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_86281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><\/span><\/a>Mer Tagh Outdoor Cafe<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eventually, I decided to stop and had a very late lunch at Mer Tagh. \u00a0I had a very good &#8216;lachmajoun&#8217; which is referred to as Armenian pizza. \u00a0This is a thin-crust pizza with chopped meat, tomato sauce and spices. \u00a0Yum! \u00a0It was fun to sit outdoors and watch the weekend shoppers and tourists pass by. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_86291.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5722\" title=\"DSC_8629\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_86291.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" \/><\/span><\/a>Walking Down North Way<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday &#8211; July 28, 2013 Goods For Sale Francoise left Yerevan and flew home to France very early this morning. \u00a0After I had breakfast at the hotel, I walked to the Vernissage outdoor market at the end of the street.
