Tavern. \u00a0Inside there were pool and fooze-ball tables along with checkered tablecloth-covered dining tables. \u00a0The proprietor was a feisty woman who had put Einstein posters in the ladies room because she told me &#8220;liked Einstein.&#8221; Toltec Scenic Railroad. \u00a0It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offered daily historic steam train rides. \u00a0After stopping at the modern Chama Visitor&#8217;s Center we drove to the Railroad Station to take pictures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1187.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6220\" title=\"DSC_1187\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a>Cabooses<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1190.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6221\" title=\"DSC_1190\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Coal Storage &amp; Hotel and had an interesting lunch. \u00a0I should have asked about the &#8216;pool tournament&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1205.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6224\" title=\"DSC_1205\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a>Foster Restaurant &amp; Hotel<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1207.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6225\" title=\"DSC_1207\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"314\" \/><\/a>Foster&#8217;s Signs<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">About twenty miles out of Tres Piedras, we noticed that we had only a quarter tank of gas left in our rental car. \u00a0According to the dot on the map, Tres Piedras was the largest town in the area, so we continued. \u00a0Imagine our surprise when we arrived in Tres Piedras to discover that it was an intersection. \u00a0Yes, a crossroads. \u00a0To the right was a commercial seed and feed establishment. \u00a0The road ahead continued as a very long straight line leading into the desert. \u00a0A few small buildings dotted the landscape reaching to the far horizon. \u00a0On our left was a closed, long abandoned gas station. \u00a0We turned left, hoping to find a new replacement. \u00a0The grocery store in the photo below was near the gas station.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1214.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6226\" title=\"DSC_1214\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a>Grocery Store in Tres Piedras, New Mexico<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We noticed a small restaurant on the opposite side of the road with a sign offering groceries and beer. \u00a0There were a couple of young men out front with their heads under the hood of their pick-up truck. \u00a0We parked and I went inside to inquire about the closest gas station. \u00a0The bleached-blond woman glared at me and stated, &#8220;Thirty miles to the right; thirty miles to the left; fifty miles down the road and thirty miles where ya came from. \u00a0Take your pick.&#8221; \u00a0I thanked her and we continued on our thirty mile journey to Ojo Caliente, swearing to check the gas gauge every morning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1216.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6227\" title=\"DSC_1216\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a>Gas Station in Ojo Caliente<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The green trees and mountains of Colorado and northern New Mexico gave way to sparse shrubs and dryer landscapes. \u00a0I turned on the radio and found a local station on a National Public Radio channel which was playing Native American music. \u00a0Imagine driving into Santa Fe, New Mexico listening to the steady beating of a singular drum and the coarse chanting of a Hopi Medicine Man singing an ancient Native American chant. \u00a0That was our entry to Santa Fe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1222.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6228\" title=\"DSC_1222\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a>Approaching Santa Fe, NM<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1230.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6230\" title=\"DSC_1230\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a>Camel Rock<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1262.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6231\" title=\"DSC_1262\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_1262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a>Downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday, September 21, 2013 We had a long driving day ahead of us to go from Durango, Colorado to Santa Fe, New Mexico. \u00a0We drove along Route 160 East and stopped for a moment at The Chimney Rock Restaurant &amp;
