{"id":6271,"date":"2013-11-08T07:20:35","date_gmt":"2013-11-08T12:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=6271"},"modified":"2013-12-29T09:46:31","modified_gmt":"2013-12-29T14:46:31","slug":"colonial-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=6271","title":{"rendered":"Colonial History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday, November 8, 2013<\/p>\n<p>My last entry was written at the beginning of this trip. \u00a0Now I&#8217;m writing at the end of a very busy week which was filled with history and genealogy lectures at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. \u00a0While I sat listening and taking notes in seminars, Jeff filled his time exploring the Tidewater region of coastal Virginia. \u00a0The lectures and field trips were organized by Road Scholars, which conducts national and international learning adventures for people over 55 years of age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1448.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6275\" title=\"DSC_1448\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1448.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a>Bruton Parish Church From 1674<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For me this was a week of lectures about Colonial history intersperced with several research field trips. \u00a0My group of 15 historians and I traveled to the Swem Library on the campus the College of William &amp; Mary, the Library of Virginia in Richmond, and Colonial Williamsburg.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6276\" title=\"DSC_1576\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a>Colonial Williamsburg Houses<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-align: left; color: #000000;\">I was able to take a few photographs when our group had a tour of Colonial Williamsburg conducted by a professional guide. \u00a0Her knowledge of the early Virginia colony was impressive. \u00a0She was familiar with every house in the village and told stories about the people and families who lived there. \u00a0Her colorful stories were very interesting and amusing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1577.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6277\" title=\"DSC_1577\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1577.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a>Relaxing on a Fall Afternoon<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Colonial Williamsburg is a wonderful place to visit to learn about early American history. \u00a0A few miles away are two more historic sites of Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne. \u00a0Jamestown Settlement is a living history site with several recreated villages and a large museum. \u00a0Historic Jamestowne, which is part of \u00a0the U. S. National Park Service, is the original site of the first Virginia colony of 1607.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1481.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6278\" title=\"DSC_1481\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1481.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>The Susan Constant<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One free afternoon, Jeff and I explored Jamestown. \u00a0We visited replicas of the first three ships which brought 144 people and supplies to the new Virginia Colony. \u00a0The largest ship was the Susan Constant which carried 71 people and cargo\u00a0on the hazardous four-month trans-Atlantic journey. \u00a0The smaller ships, the Godspeed and the Discovery, carried fewer people but additional supplies for the British Colonists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1466.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6282\" title=\"DSC_1466\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1466.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a>Powhatan Village Homes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jamestown Settlement had a replica of a Native American village of the Powhatans. \u00a0When I asked the docents about the authenticity of their costumes, the woman said the native people wore much less clothing year-round. \u00a0She said they wore little clothing, smeared bear grease on their bodies, and wrapped animal skins around themselves to keep warm in winter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1468.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6283\" title=\"DSC_1468\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1468.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a>Interior of Native American Houses<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1464.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6284\" title=\"DSC_1464\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_1464.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a>Native American Guides<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The re-created fort of Jamestown showed buildings and houses from 1610 &#8211;
