This morning, the hotel had a wax figure of Woodrow Wilson in the lobby to greet everyone. \u00a0He had issued a proclamation which established the first Mother&#8217;s Day. \u00a0There were groups of people in 1914 costumes milling about the lobby and a couple of musicians played period tunes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20140511-171419.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full aligncenter\" alt=\"20140511-171419.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20140511-171419.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The weather was sunny and warm with a cloudless bright blue sky. We had a leisurely Illy coffee and pain au chocolat outside at the sidewalk cafe, then took a taxi to the National Gallery of Art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2042.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6410\" alt=\"DSC_2042\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2042.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a>Rotunda of the National Gallery<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was strange to enter a museum and not be expected to pay an admission fee, but we probably do support the museum through our taxes. \u00a0The National Gallery has an excellent collection of art from around the world in an austere building.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2049.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6411\" alt=\"DSC_2049\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2049.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a>Taking a Break in the East Garden<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We saw works of art by some of our favorite artists: Renoir, Rembrandt, Monet, Matisse, Botticelli, Sergeant, Cassatt, Degas, etc. \u00a0There were three Vermeer paintings and the only Da Vinci painting in North America. \u00a0After several hours, we had a light lunch at the Cascade Cafeteria. \u00a0We splurged on some excellent gelato for dessert, then passed through the tunnel to the contemporary art building.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2060.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6412\" alt=\"DSC_2060\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2060.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a>Tunnel Connecting the Buildings<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2096.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6413\" alt=\"DSC_2096\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2096.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a>Contemporary Art of the National Gallery<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unfortunately the exhibit galleries were undergoing renovation, so we just walked around the huge atrium, took \u00a0photographs of the space, and then left the gallery. \u00a0We walked to Pennsylvania Avenue and took a taxi back to the Willard. \u00a0After resting for a few hours, we went to the historic Ebbets Grill for dinner and I had my last crab cake for this trip. \u00a0I eat crab cakes only in this part of the world, within a few miles of the Chesapeake Bay. \u00a0Crab cakes from Maryland are definitely worth the trip.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2076.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6414\" alt=\"DSC_2076\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC_2076.jpg\" width=\"268\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>The Atrium<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday, May 11, 2014 Le Cafe du Parc Today is the centennial celebration of Mother&#8217;s Day.
