{"id":6512,"date":"2014-07-30T19:32:22","date_gmt":"2014-07-30T23:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=6512"},"modified":"2014-08-05T07:57:36","modified_gmt":"2014-08-05T11:57:36","slug":"the-new-york-botanical-gardens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=6512","title":{"rendered":"The New York Botanical Gardens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wednesday, July 30, 2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2222.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6515\" alt=\"DSC_2222\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2222.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We met our friends, Gerry and Aileen, at the Botanical Gardens to socialize and take photographs. \u00a0The &#8216;garden&#8217; is an amazing 240 acre oasis in the Bronx borough of New York City. \u00a0A large portion of it is preserved native eastern woodlands. \u00a0There are magnificent old-growth trees as well as beautiful formal gardens filled with spectacular seasonal flowers. We are so fortunate to have this wonderful treasure in our own &#8216;backyard&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2216.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6516\" alt=\"DSC_2216\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2216.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I was young, my brother and I frequently walked to the Botanical Gardens from my grandparents&#8217; house in the Bronx. It was a long walk but we spent the day exploring every corner of the &#8216;garden&#8217;. \u00a0We discovered the paths and trails and learned about the different sections of plants and trees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2231.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6517\" alt=\"DSC_2231\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2231.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2190.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6518\" alt=\"DSC_2190\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2190.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Bronx River meanders through the Garden and historically provided power for the old Snuff Mill. We rested on the rock wall near the river under majestic trees and listened to the moving water. \u00a0We also enjoyed walking along the path next to the river up to the waterfall. In our childish naivet\u00e9, we thought we had discovered the waterfall and no one else knew it existed. \u00a0It was thrilling to sit next to the loud falling waters and feel the cool spray on hot summer days. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2207.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6519\" alt=\"DSC_2207\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2207.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This Wednesday, the weather was perfect: warm in the sun, comfortable in the shade. We walked along pathways and through some outdoor seasonal gardens which were overflowing with bright blooms. We visited the Enid Haupt Conservatory to see beautiful temperate and tropical gardens. The twin reflecting pools behind the greenhouse glowed with unusual water lilies and we watched dragonflies hover above the flowers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2256.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6520\" alt=\"DSC_2256\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2256.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Botanical Garden has changed somewhat during the last fifty years. \u00a0It is better organized and staffed with friendlier people, and has a greater variety of plants and flowers. \u00a0New speciality areas have sprung up and there seems to be a more active outreach to the Bronx community. \u00a0There are two new buildings which house cafes and there is a large gift shop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2253.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6521\" alt=\"DSC_2253\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_2253.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Currently, the 1840 Lorillard Snuff Mill is reserved as a catering facility and offices.
