I think this was the first time I ever slept in a cornfield.<\/p>\n<p>We entered the Central Time Zone sometime yesterday so our internal clocks were off this morning. We checked out early and drove toward Lake Michigan to see the Indiana Dunes National and State Parks. This was rated\u00a0as the state&#8217;s best natural attraction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2757.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6644\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2757.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2757\" width=\"400\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a>Indiana Dunes Looking West<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sorry to say\u00a0we were disappointed because, as we stood in the sand, we could see belching chimneys of power plants, factories, and steel mills in the distance at both ends of the beach. Lake Michigan looked beautiful and the sand was a fine grain. The beaches were lovely, but\u2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2755.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6645\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2755.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2755\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a>Indiana Dunes Looking East<\/p>\n<p>The dunes were impressive: high and covered with grass and trees. \u00a0We snapped a few pictures and drove back to Route 20 toward Gary, Indiana. We had liked Indiana and the people we met there, but the northwest corner was full of huge oil refineries, steel mills, factories, power plants, and other commercial buildings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2764.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6646\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2764.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2764\" width=\"400\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a>A Refinery Near Gary, Indiana<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2781.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6647\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2781.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2781\" width=\"400\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a>Sign By the Road<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Probably the biggest surprises of this trip so far are the quantity of trucks on the small byways and the heavy industry visible from the road. Routes 6 and 20 converged with Interstates 80 and 90 between Gary and Chicago. The highways\u00a0were congested with huge trucks and the scenery was not attractive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2791.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6648\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2791.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2791\" width=\"400\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a>Part of a Huge Refinery<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2796.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6649\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2796.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2796\" width=\"400\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a>Horseshoe Casino Sign Near Chicago<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Approaching a large city is always exciting. There seems to be a quicker pace and a sense of heightened activity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2805.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6650\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2805.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2805\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a>Approaching Chicago<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2811.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6651\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2811.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2811\" width=\"400\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a>Chicago Skyline<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was warm and hazy as we passed by Chicago on the Interstate. We debated whether to stop to visit the city on this trip, and we decided to save it for another time because there was too much to see in The Windy City. I took a couple of photos from the car, which I called my &#8216;drive-by shootings&#8217;. Sometimes they work well and sometimes they don&#8217;t, but these photos always remind me of what I saw.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2812.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6652\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2812.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2812\" width=\"400\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a>Rain Storm<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It took a long time to get past Chicago and away from the surrounding smaller cities. We had a bit of rain at one point but by afternoon it was 84 degrees and sunny.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After we left\u00a0the Interstate and\u00a0rejoined Route 20, we found a place for a late lunch in a town called Addison, Illinois.\u00a0Jeff spotted it from the road and it looked like a &#8216;fun&#8217; place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2820.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6653\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2820.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2820\" width=\"400\" height=\"219\" \/><\/a>Portillo&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_8225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6654\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_8225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8225\" width=\"400\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a>Charbroiled Chicken Sandwich<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Portillo&#8217;s was a lively, very efficiently run restaurant with very good American fast food. The decor was chrome and formica with &#8217;50s Rock &#8216;n&#8217; Roll music playing overhead. It was a beautiful day for a ride in the country!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2838.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6658\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_2838.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_2838\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a>Hills of Northwestern Illinois<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We were tired of driving so we stopped at a small town called Galena to take a break. It was almost five o&#8217;clock and we had been on the road since nine in the morning. Galena was so charming that we decided to book\u00a0a room at the DeSoto House Hotel.
