We didn&#8217;t try the naturally warm pool but enjoyed a decent breakfast and left to see ancient petroglyphs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3436.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6782\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3436.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3436\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" \/><\/span><\/a>Far From the Middle of Nowhere<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Legend Rock Petroglyphs was located about twenty miles east of Thermopolis, out in the middle of barren nowhere. Visitors have to obtain a key to the grounds before they drive out or make sure that someone is out there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3441.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6783\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3441.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3441\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a>Caretaker&#8217;s Cabin<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A tall stout woman wearing western jeans and a cowboy hat greeted us as we drove in. She sat in a comfortable lawn chair and looked like she was expecting us. \u00a0The woman explained the history of the area and the drawings. We learned that Shamans made pilgrimages to this sacred land to gain wisdom and power. Some left marks on the rocks to express a variety of ideas, symbols, and experiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3446.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6784\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3446.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3446\" width=\"400\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a>Petroglyph<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Thunderbirds and horned animals represented power which was transferred to the Shamans. Some of the petroglyphs were believed to be dated from 8000 BC &#8211; 6000 BC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3452.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6785\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3452.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3452\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Dinwoody Tradition Style Petroglyph<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The figure with a line connecting it to two objects is believed to be a person connected to the spirit world of the rock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3471.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6786\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3471.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3471\" width=\"400\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a>Elk Petroglyphs<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The two elk pictured above are believed to be just two thousand years old. The oldest petroglyphs in Legend Rock were\u00a0approximately 11,ooo years old, according to the caretaker. They are drawings of bison, elk, bighorn sheep, and deer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3482.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6787\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3482.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3482\" width=\"400\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a>Pronghorn Deer<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Driving away from\u00a0Legend Rock Petroglyphs we saw pronghorn deer which have very unusual markings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3509.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6788\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3509.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3509\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a>Wind River Canyon<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We drove twenty miles back to Thermopolis and returned to\u00a0Route 20 West. The terrain immediately changed as we left town. We passed through a steep canyon\u00a0and then through many miles of the Wind River Indian Reservation. The flat barren land was broken up by tiny towns with small cement-block casinos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3518.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6789\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3518.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3518\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a>Route 20 West<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After several hours of driving through flat corn &amp; soy fields and cattle ranches, we stopped in Lander, Wy. \u00a0at the Gannett Grill for a tasty lunch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3528.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6790\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3528.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3528\" width=\"242\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Lander, Wyoming<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3530.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6791\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3530.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3530\" width=\"400\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a>Gannett Grill in Lander, Wyoming<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3540.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6792\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3540.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3540\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a>Red Rock Canyon<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We knew we were getting close to Yellowstone\u00a0because the land slowly became more interesting. \u00a0We stopped for gas in a town called Shoshoni &#8211; population: 629 elevation: 4839 feet. We had 2695 miles on the car odometer since we left New York.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3543.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6793\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DSC_3543.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3543\" width=\"400\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a>Approaching the Tetons<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was a glorious sight to watch the towering peaks of the Grand Teton Mountains rise on the horizon as we approached Jackson Hole.
