I left home Wednesday afternoon and arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan on Thursday night &#8211; October 16th. \u00a0It had been a long flight with a plane-change and several hours wait in Vienna. When I finally reached the Crown Hotel in the evening, I was exhausted but ready for adventure. \u00a0I was joining\u00a0a Road Scholars group to tour the three countries of the southern Caucasus: Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia for the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_5014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8106\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_5014.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_5014\" width=\"400\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Crown Hotel &#8211; Baku, Azerbaijan<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_4789.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8107\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_4789.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_4789\" width=\"400\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Traffic in Baku<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I met my fellow travelers Friday morning. There are twelve of us plus our tour guide, Inge, and a local Azeri guide, Latif, and the driver of our modern coach bus. After breakfast and introductions, we drove through the modern city of Baku. Our destination was the hilltop vista of Memorial Park\u00a0which offered excellent views overlooking the capital city and the Caspian Sea. Unfortunately, the weather was very foggy and sight was limited.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_86981.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8108\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_86981.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8698\" width=\"400\" height=\"309\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Memorial Mosque in the former Kirov Park<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_4812.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8109\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_4812.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_4812\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Eternal Flame Memorial<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_87211.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8110\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_87211.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8721\" width=\"321\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Wall of the Old City<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Most of the buildings in Baku are made of ochre limestone blocks and the entire city\u00a0seemed restored and cleaned. It&#8217;s modern city with tall office buildings and many streets reminded me of Paris. The current temple was built in the late 1800s by Hindi-speaking Indians who lived in Baku.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_87731.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8135\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_87731.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8773\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_5001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8136\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_5001.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_5001\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_8776.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8137\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_8776.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8776\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Baku is the beginning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline running from the Caspian Sea oilfields through Georgia and Turkey to the Mediterranean Sea. The Azeri capital oozes wealth with an abundance of\u00a0luxury hotels and world-famous shops and beautiful modern buildings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_5010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8138\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_5010.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_5010\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_8785.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8139\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_8785.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8785\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After we visited the temple, we returned to the hotel for a short rest then we drove out through the streets of Baku at night.
