We gathered all our luggage and boarded the bus for a nine o&#8217;clock departure. These were\u00a0our last hours in the country of Kazakhstan and the impressive city of Almaty. We were on our way to a falconry demonstration in the foothills of the impressive mountains to the south. The day\u00a0was sunny and bright and the Tien Shen Range was visible in all its glory. The previous days had been overcast and visibility of the imposing mountains was limited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_98501.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7725\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_98501.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9850\" width=\"400\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a>Tien Shen Mountain Range<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wow! What a visible treat it was to see the mountains. Tall snowy peaks dominated the horizon and dwarfed the city. It was difficult to take good photos from the bus, but I tried as we drove through modern, upscale, wealthy Almaty toward the falcon ranch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_9810.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7726\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_9810.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9810\" width=\"400\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_9812.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7727\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_9812.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9812\" width=\"400\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_9814.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7728\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_9814.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9814\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not great photos, but you get the idea\u2026. Almaty is a large cosmopolitan\u00a0city with excellent roads, upscale homes, large apartment complexes, hotels, and office buildings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DSC_6681.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7729\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DSC_6681.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_6681\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">We passed a state park and climbed up a hill to the facility which had grown beyond raising birds of prey and dogs to include a small seasonal hotel, restaurant, and stables. The people at the facility were attempting to preserve that art for future generations. They showed how a variety of birds were trained to help hunt for food: an eagle owl, a falcon, a golden eagle, a Kazakh bald eagle, and a vulture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DSC_6709.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7734\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DSC_6709.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_6709\" width=\"400\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DSC_6723.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7735\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DSC_6723.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_6723\" width=\"400\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">They also raised Kazakh greyhound dogs and other breeds in the kennel. We bid farewell to Almaty and, like Silk Road travelers throughout history, we embarked on the five hour drive to the border which crossed\u00a0into Kyrgyzstan. The road ran westbound along the Tien Shen Mountain range for most of the journey. Then the coach turned south and crossed over a mountain pass. We cued up to get our passports stamped out of Kazakhstan. Then we had to pull our suitcases and\u00a0walk across a short bridge which was the official border between the two countries. On the other side, we lined up again to have the passports stamped into Kyrgyzstan. Another large coach waited for us just beyond the border. \u00a0A strict NO Photos policy was in effect at all border crossings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_9856.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7758\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_9856.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9856\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We arrived in Bishkek after dark, had dinner at a local restaurant, and then were taken to our hotel: The Golden Dragon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_98571.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7760\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_98571.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9857\" width=\"400\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a>Dinner in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It had been a long and interesting day and I was tired.
