{"id":797,"date":"2010-08-29T16:29:41","date_gmt":"2010-08-29T20:29:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=797"},"modified":"2010-09-26T15:02:59","modified_gmt":"2010-09-26T19:02:59","slug":"leiden-delft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=797","title":{"rendered":"Leiden &#038; Delft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 0.79in } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saturday, August 28<sup>th<\/sup> &#8211; cloudy, windy, and cool outside:\u00a0 We stayed in one of the Schiphol Airport business hotels Friday night so that we wouldn&#8217;t have to deal with Amsterdam bike traffic and we could leave the area easily with a rental car in the morning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8662.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-806\" title=\"DSC_8662.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8662.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> We had reserved a rental car over the Internet last night and the little silver Honda Jazz was waiting for us when we got there. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8635.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-807\" title=\"DSC_8635.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8635.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We loaded up the car and found the highway south to the lovely city of Leiden. It was only about 30 minutes from the Amsterdam Airport.\u00a0 Leiden is a vibrant college town full of young people on bicycles and Leiden University is the oldest university in the Netherlands.\u00a0 It was founded in 1575 by William, Prince of Orange, leader of the Dutch Revolt. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8682.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-808\" title=\"DSC_8682.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8682.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Typical of Dutch cities, many of the streets in Leiden are lovely canals with walking and bike lanes along the canal.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">We found a parking lot near the &#8220;centrum&#8221; of town, parked the car, and walked around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8726.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-809\" title=\"DSC_8726.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8726.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The narrow streets were filled with market stalls so we surmised that it was Saturday Market Day, like in France.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8699.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-811\" title=\"DSC_8699.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8699.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The sun peeked out from behind clouds and the temperature felt warmer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8695.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-812\" title=\"DSC_8695.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8695.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We kept seeing shops and stalls selling Turkish food and spices.\u00a0 I thought I must be dreaming.\u00a0 There seems to be a population of Turkish people in Holland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8689.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-810\" title=\"DSC_8689.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8689.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jeff and I have been looking to replace our Swiss travel rain jackets and we were happy to see that one of the stalls had inexpensive fold-up rain jackets.\u00a0 Jeff bought a gray\/black one and I bought an oversized bright red one.\u00a0 It matches my red umbrella!\u00a0 We also bought some snacks for lunch.\u00a0 We walked around for a while and had fun seeing the crowds of people and the goods for sale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8725.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-813\" title=\"DSC_8725.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8725.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We left Leiden at about 2:30 to go to the famous city of Delft, Holland.\u00a0 We were armed with one of Jeff&#8217;s 15 year old Michelin maps of Holland, no Dutch vocabulary, and my infallible sense of direction!\u00a0 How could we go wrong?\u00a0 We got a little lost leaving Leiden but finally found the A-4 highway to Delft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8645.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-814\" title=\"DSC_8645.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8645.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We finally found Delft and after unsuccessfully following &#8220;Centrum&#8221; signs, which led drivers around the periphery of the city.\u00a0 Then we found a parking garage near the center of town so we were able to get rid of the car.\u00a0 This was one of those unbelievable spotlessly clean modern garages that are well lighted and safe.\u00a0 We felt good about leaving the car and our luggage in the garage and went out to explore the famous city of Delft tiles and Delft porcelain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8737.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-816\" title=\"DSC_8737.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8737.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Delft is another lovely Dutch town with beautiful canals and lovely old brick buildings. In the center marketplace just outside the huge &#8220;New&#8221; church, was another Saturday Market.\u00a0 This one had antiques and collectibles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8754.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-817\" title=\"DSC_8754.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8754.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After walking around for a while we thought we should find a hotel for the night.\u00a0 We happened upon a &#8220;tourist office&#8221; and inquired about hotels.\u00a0 The woman said she would call the hotels for us to see if they had rooms available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8795.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-818\" title=\"DSC_8795.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8795.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first one we chose was the Hotel Johannes Vermeer.\u00a0 It had been an old cigar factory and was converted to a hotel in 2000.\u00a0 It was on one of the smaller canals, had free WiFi, and sounded good in the brochure.\u00a0 The woman called and they had a double room for 89 Euros per night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8797.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-819\" title=\"DSC_8797.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8797.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We walked to the hotel and the young man gave us the keys to two of the rooms and told us to choose whichever room we liked best.\u00a0 The first was on the fourth floor at the top of two twisting circular staircases and looked like a cozy garret. The second room was much larger with a seating area, a very large bathroom with a skylight and on the third floor &#8211; only one circular staircase.\u00a0 We chose the second room.\u00a0 Both rooms were the same price!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8833.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-820\" title=\"DSC_8833.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8833.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We were hungry and went out to find a restaurant for dinner.\u00a0 There seemed to be more ethnic restaurants in Delft than at home.\u00a0 We found Chinese, Indian, Spanish Tapas, Indonesian, Italian, Mexican, French, and Turkish restaurants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8852.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-821\" title=\"DSC_8852.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8852.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then Jeff spotted the Spijshuis De Dis &#8211; Dutch Culinary Art Restaurant across the Beetenmarkt Park.\u00a0 The restaurant was warm and cozy with attractive decorations and the people were very friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8860.resized1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-823\" title=\"DSC_8860.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8860.resized1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I had a wonderful vegetarian casserole with eggplant, zucchini, nuts, raisins, and onion. It was delicious!\u00a0 Jeff had beef stew with roasted potatoes.\u00a0 It was a relaxing and pleasant dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8899.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-825\" title=\"DSC_8899.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_8899.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As we left the restaurant, it began to rain again.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the small quaint historic hotel is on a no-cars narrow canal, so we had to walk to the garage to get our over-night bags from the car to take to the Johannes Vermeer Hotel.\u00a0 The rain got heavier as we walked quickly through the quiet streets of Delft.\u00a0 It continued to rain on the way back to the hotel.
