{"id":858,"date":"2010-08-30T16:27:04","date_gmt":"2010-08-30T20:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=858"},"modified":"2010-09-26T15:02:01","modified_gmt":"2010-09-26T19:02:01","slug":"no-gouda-cheese-in-gouda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=858","title":{"rendered":"No Gouda Cheese in Gouda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 0.79in } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Monday August 30th \u2013 another windy chilly rainy day!\u00a0  59 degrees with huge dark clouds rolling in from the west.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I miss the bright sun and warmth of Turkey&#8230;..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Breakfast at the Hampshire Hotel was excellent with freshly ground Italian coffee.  It had all the usual fresh breakfast buffet offerings, including tomatoes &amp; cucumbers similar to Turkish breakfasts.\u00a0 However breakfast at the Hampshire Hotel was elevated to a new high level with two chilled bottles of Prosecco standing in a large silver bowl in the corner of the breakfast counter.  Champagne glasses stood brightly next to the bowl.  Unfortunately, I didn&#8217;t have the nerve to try some, but I promised myself I would indulge tomorrow morning. We&#8217;ll see&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9061.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-861\" title=\"DSC_9061.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9061.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a>Delft Market Square Looking at the New Church<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was very windy and the rain starts and stops intermittently every few minutes.\u00a0 I wanted to finally see the historic city of Delft which is famous for its beautiful tiles and porcelain.\u00a0 It is also the city where Johannes Vermeer was born and lived his entire life.\u00a0 There are two major churches and are the famous landmarks in the city of Delft: the Nieuwe Kerk and the Oude Kerk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9090.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-862\" title=\"DSC_9090.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9090.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a>The 12th Century Old Church<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The New Church was built in 1381 and contains the crypt of the Princes of Orange.\u00a0 The Old Church is the oldest church in Delft and was built sometime in the 1200s and has a memorial stone dedicated to Johannes Vermeer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We walked around for a while and had a warm cup of coffee in a cafe which was decorated with old music posters of John Coltrane and Elvis Presley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9113.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-863\" title=\"DSC_9113.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9113.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a>A Coffee Shop Selling Coffee, Tea, &amp; Pastries <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We stopped into one of the three shops that manufacture real Delft pottery.\u00a0 A man was glazing some pieces and it was interesting to see the unfinished work.\u00a0 The woman in the shop told me how to tell real Delft pottery from the many imitations and she said that all the shops in the main square sell imitations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9064.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-864\" title=\"DSC_9064.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9064.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a>&#8220;De Candelear&#8221; Delftware Ceramics Factory<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the afternoon we decided to take a drive to the city of Gouda to find some cheese. The traffic was moderately heavy and the land is very flat.\u00a0 We reached Gouda in about 30 minutes and found a garage near the &#8221; Markt Centrum&#8221;.\u00a0 We walked to the main square of the city and saw the picturesque Stadhuis in the center.\u00a0 This is a lovely Gothic town hall which was built in the 15th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9142.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-865\" title=\"DSC_9142.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9142.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a>The Gouda Stadhuis (Town Hall)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Towering over the city are the spires of the huge Sint Janskerk (St. John&#8217;s Church).\u00a0 The guide said that the original church was built in the 13th century but was destroyed by fires three times over the years.\u00a0 Each time the church was rebuilt, it was extended so that today it is the longest church in the Netherlands.\u00a0 Saint John&#8217;s Church is famous for its stained glass windows which were made in the 1500s, but the church was closed.\u00a0 We walked around the large church and explored the neighborhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9136.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-866\" title=\"DSC_9136.resized\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_9136.resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a>St. Janskerk Behind Buildings in Gouda<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We had been hoping to find a shop that sold Gouda cheese, or even a cheese maker in Gouda, but there were no cheese shops in the main square.\u00a0 It was getting late so we decided to return to Delft.\u00a0 Tomorrow we&#8217;re moving on to another city.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t know where, we&#8217;ll decide later.\u00a0 I will continue to write about this trip and post it when I have access to the Internet.\u00a0 The weather forecasters predicted more sun than rain tomorrow, so we&#8217;re hoping for a better day.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monday August 30th \u2013 another windy chilly rainy day!\u00a0 59 degrees with huge dark clouds rolling in from the west.
