We had an excellent buffet breakfast in the dining room. I hoped the &#8216;coca tea&#8217; will help my head acclimate\u00a0to the altitude. The Tambo del Inka Resort is very peaceful and comfortable. It&#8217;s a wonderful place to stay. \u00a0Too bad it isn&#8217;t closer to home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9390.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8970\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9390.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_9390\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> We collected our day packs and joined the rest of the group in the lobby. \u00a0A local woman distributed\u00a0walking sticks decorated with textile caps and water bottle holders labeled Machu Picchu. We boarded the buses at 8:30 and drove forty minutes to the nearby village of Ollantaytambo to explore the <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Parque Arqueological Nacional<\/span>\u00a0which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3242.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8971\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3242.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3242\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9250.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8972\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9250.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_9250\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Below is a view of the village of Ollantaytambo as seen from the former Inca terraces which date from the mid-15th century. Originally built for farming and irrigation, the stone constructions were used as strongholds against the Spanish conquistadors.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3248.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8973\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3248.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3248\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9246.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8974\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9246.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_9246\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Later, we explored the village below the site. It consisted of four buildings around an inner courtyard. Ears of corn were spread out\u00a0on the ground\u00a0to dry in the center of the yard. One building served as living accommodations and the others were for storage and animals. A pen of guinea pigs was in the corner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9327.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8985\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9327.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_9327\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3257.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8987\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3257.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3257\" width=\"322\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9331.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8989\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9331.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_9331\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The guide held up a skull which the farmer found in his field some years ago. He gave it a name and believed it was good luck so it had an honored position in his storage room.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3263.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8986\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3263.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3263\" width=\"319\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A festival was being held in Ollantaytambo during the\u00a0week. The family in the photo below was washing and preparing a pig for slaughter in their courtyard. They waited until the tourists left before they did the deed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3266.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8988\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3266.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3266\" width=\"400\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9253.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8990\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9253.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_9253\" width=\"400\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span>We returned to our hotel for a cooking demonstration (ceviche and lomo saltado) given by the sous chef, Jose. It was fun to watch the preparations, but I&#8217;ll pass the recipe to the cooks in my family.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">We had a wonderful buffet lunch which included alpaca ribs, quinoa, and potatoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9366.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8993\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9366.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_9366\" width=\"400\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9385.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8994\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC_9385.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_9385\" width=\"381\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; line-height: 1.5;\">Then we took a short walk from the hotel to Pablo Seminario&#8217;s pottery studio in the village of Urubamba. We sat on chairs set up on the lawn and watched as he prepared his offerings and listened to him chant and pray.
