{"id":9425,"date":"2015-08-20T09:49:47","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T13:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=9425"},"modified":"2015-09-05T08:41:26","modified_gmt":"2015-09-05T12:41:26","slug":"borobudur-temple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=9425","title":{"rendered":"Borobudur Temple &#038; Farewell to Java"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday 20 August 2015<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_58551.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9600\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_58551.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5855\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today was our day to visit the 9th century Borobudur Temple, the largest buddhist temple in the world, which UNESCO calls &#8220;one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1462.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9601\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1462.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1462\" width=\"400\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The monument consists of nine stacked platforms topped by a central dome. \u00a0Borobudur is decorated with\u00a02,672 relief panels and 504 statues of Buddha. \u00a0I\u00a0climbed up to the top level, the realm of Nirvana, to walk among the \u00a072 bell-shaped stupas each with a statue of Buddha inside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1467.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9602\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1467.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1467\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1479.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9603\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1479.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1479\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1538.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9604\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1538.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1538\" width=\"400\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1526.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9605\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1526.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1526\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were beautiful views of the green tropical plains and Javanese mountains surrounding Borobudur Temple. After spending time at the top, it was a steep descent back to ground level.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1548.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9606\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1548.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1548\" width=\"258\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The group walked to a station and we boarded small horse-drawn carriages for a ride through a local village to visit several &#8216;cottage industry&#8217; businesses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9607\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1576.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1576\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first place we stopped was a rice cakes business owned by an older woman who employed several local women and family members. The proprietor and his wife were present as we watched several young women knot\u00a0human hair on tiny threads.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1649.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9612\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1649.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1649\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1655.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9613\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1655.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1655\" width=\"400\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1657.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9614\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1657.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1657\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We went to the Sekar Kedhaton Restaurant for lunch and afterwards visited their shop and silversmiths.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1672.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9615\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1672.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1672\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1674.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9616\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1674.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1674\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We returned to the lovely modern Santika Premiere Hotel to rest up for our &#8216;Farewell to Java&#8217; dinner. Later we walked to the Dowa Honje Mangkubumi Restaurant. \u00a0Crossing streets in Java are a real challenge because there are few traffic lights and the traffic does not stop for pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_5905.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9617\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_5905.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5905\" width=\"324\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Near the major intersection of\u00a0the hotel, we passed the Tugu Yogyakarta monument and saw it brightly illuminated against\u00a0a dark night. The stark\u00a0white obelisk was built in 1755 by the Sultan I as a symbol of unity between the people and the authorities in their fight against invaders. The monument was rebuilt in 1889 after the original was destroyed in an earthquake.
